Broadstone Warren Scout Site & Activity Centre

Over the past few years we have seen the number of DofE groups using the site increase. We believe that this is due to the unique location of the site which is within walking distance of a range of other campsites. Outlined below is some information for making planning DofE practices and expeditions easier. We can also provide a programme for the Gold Residential.

What can be provided for training and the expedition?

As a site we provide camping space for any numbers in the group. We often have groups of between four and one hundred and fifty DofE participants staying on site for training or the expedition. Some stay for one night and others for longer. We can also provide training rooms in the form of our Hall, Field Study Centre or Meeting Room that are ideal for indoor training. More information about camping and indoor accommodation can be found on this website.

Is there anywhere inside for leaders or assessors to stay?

Plantation Lodge is ideal for any adults who are staying on site, but don't want to camp with the young people for whatever reason. This small building sleeps four in two bunks, and has cold running water and a small stove.

What is the area like for walking?

The area surrounding Broadstone Warren mainly consists of the Ashdown Forest, much of which is open access to walkers. There is good access to footpaths, including National Trails such as the Sussex Border Path and the Vanguard Way. There are a couple of main roads that may need to be crossed depending on the direction of travel, including the A22.

Which is the local Ordnance Survey Map?

Explorer Map 135 covers the area surrounding Broadstone Warren.

What if we need an assessor for our expedition?

We now have a number of qualified DofE Assessors connected with the site. These can be available at short notice (in case of a last minute cancellation) or can be pre-booked. Please contact the site if you would like to book an assessor.

As a site, we currently provide two or three opportunities to young people to complete their Gold Residential each year. We are keen to develop this over the coming years. We offer young people the opportunity to work on the site in the role of an Activity Centre Assistant. This includes assisting on activities and involvement in maintenance, cleaning and working in the shop. Prior knowledge is recognised (for example if the young person has an existing activity qualification) and full support is provided during the stay. Accommodation can be provided, but depending on the time of year this may be indoors or camping.

To find out more about any of the above opportunities, or to make a provisional booking for a practice, expedition or assessor, please do not hesitate to contact us.
